A new distro is always a bit like Christmas morning. It’s all text based but seems to take much longer when the file copies are going. The alternate CD is a sloooow way to install. I also said yes to using ecryptfs for my home directory (more on that in another post). I decided to use ext4, which is the default now, as I had not trusted it in 9.04 and wanted to give it a spin.

The partition tool has been updated and now support creating LVM and software raid in the menu (It may have been there in previous versions, but I never noticed it).

The install has been slick for the last several releases, and this one is no different. Thanks to the alternate CD I was able to boot with the ‘noapic’ options which fixed the issue. I tried the alternate CD with the same result. It just stopped and presented no error messages. The install CD would not boot past the initial menu where I had selected the install option. I installed it on my laptop, I use it for a lot of things but the data is always expendable.

A word to the wise, this is beta software and not yet ready for prime time. Get Kubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala beta 1 here. So far it’s been less trouble than I would have expected from a first beta, and runs well. In particular, it lists the lengths of all tracks.I just installed a copy of the titular distro last night and have been playing with it a bit. Is there any way to make audio CDs play with either GStreamer, Xine or MPlayer (preferably GStreamer)? So, I seem to have run out of options, except for VLC, Winamp-inspired (Qmmp, Audacious) and Mono (Banshee), all of which I want to avoid. GNOME-based CD players such as Sound Juicer and Goobox pull in half of GNOME itself, which is undesirable. In Kaffeine with Xine, the CD plays (at least the first track) but there is no list of tracks and neither can I skip tracks. In MPlayer and its front-ends, including SMPlayer and UMPlayer, the CD sound stutters because, according to the MPlayer log, the CD cache for MPlayer does not respond (irrespective of the cache size). In Bangarang, CD tracks don't show up at all. AmaroK shows the CD tracks but trying to play them after adding them to the playlist does nothing. Audio CDs play fine in Ubuntu 11.10 but in Kubuntu 11.10, even with AmaroK 2.5, audio CDs appear as playback devices and can also be ripped but I cannot play the CDs directly.
